How to Build and Maintain a Positive Healthcare Workplace Culture

MGMA Conference Provides Valuable Insight on Healthcare Workplace Trends

Striving for a positive workplace culture in healthcare seems to be a top priority and key initiative for healthcare administrators and practice managers this year, according to Steve Marsh, managing partner of The Medicus Firm. Marsh recently attended the annual conference of the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA), in Anaheim, CA, where he provided a presentation on the topic of workplace culture, for a large group of conference attendees.

"It's clear that the physician shortage is impacting employers more than ever, and healthcare leaders want to know how to make their workplaces most attractive and productive for all employees, especially physicians," Marsh states. "Our session on workplace culture went really well and was very well-attended, as were several other seminars on similar or related topics. Creating and maintaining a great work environment seems to be especially important to healthcare employers this year."

In his presentation at the 2017 MGMA conference, Marsh provided an overview of the foundations of a positive office culture, as well as 5 critical key concepts of building and maining a positive healthcare workplace environment.

Fundamentals and Key Components for Creating a Positive Work Environment

Some of the fundamental components include a combination of passion, energy, and enthusiasm, along with a set of well-thought-out and well-communicated core values.

Three of the five critical concepts for building and maintaining a positive workplace environment are:

  • A positive culture inspires great company events, not the other way around.
  • Responsive listening, and a truly open door policy.
  • Leading through inspiration, not fear.

Marsh provided a great deal of detailed background research, real-life examples, and insight on each of the foundational concepts and critical building blocks to illustrate how healthcare employers can create their own positive, successful workplace environment that is attractive, productive, and conducive to retaining a team of top healthcare professionals, including physicians, advanced practice clinicians, support staff, and administrative workers.

Marsh began his presentation to the audience of MGMA conference attendees by explaining that, much like physician recruiting, building and maintaining a positive workplace culture isn't rocket science, in and of itself... "the concepts are not extremely complex or complicated... it's just extremely labor-intensive, and requires that employers make a deliberate choice to be disciplined and consistent with their efforts" towards forming and maintaining the best workplace environment and positive corporate culture.

Mr. Marsh has consistently excelled and succeeded in the physician recruiting industry since the early 1990s, and is a co-founder of The Medicus Firm, which has been recognized over the years as a top employer in Texas and Georgia, and also as one of the Best Places to Work in Healthcare. Much of Mr. Marsh's presentation was based upon his personal experience as a manager and business owner, collaborating with his co-founders, Jim Stone and Bob Collins, to establish and cultivate an award-winning work environment at The Medicus Firm.
